The mission of Athletic Fitness

Athletic Fitness is for everyone who wants to stay in shape at every age: children and young people, fathers and mothers, grandparents.

We believe that physical activity is an excellent way to support health and slow the aging process. Fitness for health has many benefits:

  • it takes place in a good and healthy social environment;
  • it develops qualities needed in everyday life, such as agility, flexibility, endurance, and strength;
  • it successfully helps with some chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and others;
  • it improves muscle tone and reduces accumulated fat.

It also contributes to the better functioning of the body’s main systems:

  • respiratory (improving lung capacity),
  • skeletal (increasing bone density and slowing the process of osteoporosis),
  • nervous (improving reflexes and activating the entire nervous system),
  • endocrine and immune (blood sugar control, strengthening the immune system) and circulatory (improved circulation in the body).

Our view

What is fitness to us?

Many people confuse fitness with lifting weights, building muscle, six-pack abs, weight loss, and so on. Yes, these are part of the exercises and results of fitness, but they do not cover everything.

For us at Athletic Fitness, fitness is above all health, and if we had to define it in one short sentence, we would say that it is any physical activity that leads to an improvement in physical and mental condition.

Fitness is when you swim in the sea, hike in the mountains, train on the outdoor grounds in the park, ride a bike… in general, anything that improves your condition.

Unfortunately, we cannot go to the mountains or swim in the sea every day, regardless of the season and the limited time we have. But we can visit the gym every day, regardless of the weather and the season. This is the main reason we opened and operate our fitness clubs – to provide the convenience of doing our favorite physical activities in an environment that is accessible every day.

We often hear questions and comments like, “Why should I go to the gym? I run around all day at home or at work. At the end of the day I am exhausted…” Even so, we believe that fitness should not be confused with housework, such as cleaning, washing dishes and windows, taking care of children, going around shops, and so on. All of this is physical activity, but it is not fitness because it does not lead to improved physical condition (and even less to improved mental condition).

To improve physical condition, physical activity must be purposeful and meet certain conditions. For example, when we walk slowly and the heart rate is only slightly above normal, this does not improve physical condition. However, if we walk quickly and our heart rate reaches over 120 beats per minute, this already leads to improved physical condition.

If we lift beams, building materials, or buckets of concrete, as a construction worker does, this is physical activity, but it does not improve physical condition.

Fitness should not be confused with everyday physical work, and that is why we stand by our definition: “physical activity that leads to an improvement in physical and mental condition is fitness.”

Active longevity

Fitness is health and longevity!

For us, fitness is mostly health. When we are in better physical condition, the muscles, tendons, circulatory system – in fact, all the systems in our body – improve. This helps maintain good health. If we return to the example of everyday physical work, it does not lead to better health and in many cases can even have the opposite effect. It can cause faster wear on the joints and build up heavy fatigue, which is completely different from the fatigue after a good workout. Thanks to the latter, we are one step closer to better health and better functioning of the body.

Another reason to be in good physical condition is to remain active as we age, or what is known as “active ageing.” The point is not to live to 80, 90, or 100+ years and barely be able to move. Even at an advanced age, we should be able to stay physically active, not be a burden to the people close to us, and have a fulfilling life. We should not wait until we are 80 to think about this – although even then it is not too late, as our experience with some of our favorite clients shows. We need to think about that time earlier, to build habits and a need for the body to perform physical activity regularly, which is the most important thing. Going to the gym is a good and accessible alternative for that.

Fitness as a way of life

Let us look at the idea of finite and infinite games. Games such as football and chess have a beginning and an end, the players are known, the rules are defined, and the goal is clear. At the end there are winners and losers. I call such games “finite.”

Infinite games, such as business, politics, or life itself, continue endlessly over time – there is no final whistle. There are no winners and losers. The goal is to stay in the game. If we apply this theory to fitness, the goal is not simply to achieve a better-looking body, larger muscle measurements, or weight loss. The main goal is HEALTH. Fitness is a way of life! It helps develop and maintain all systems in the body: immune, motor, muscular, skeletal, circulatory, respiratory, including the nervous system, which in turn is responsible for our mental state.

These reflections sound especially relevant and convincing against the backdrop of the COVID-19 situation. The surest protection against dangerous viruses is our own immune system. And as we know, it is much stronger in people who perform regular physical activity. Even vaccines would work best if we have a strong immune system. This is because the vaccine antigen stimulates the body’s immune system to remember it, recognize it as a threat, and destroy it. The actual fight against the virus is carried out by our own immune system, which is prompted into action by the vaccine.

In short, by training regularly we equip our body with a powerful weapon against external threats. The most important thing is to “stay in the game” constantly and regularly. Temporary rises and drops in form are normal, but if we do not give up, the reward is the one everyone wants most – HEALTH. What better motivation to go to the gym than that!

Stay healthier!
